plattner & plattner Art Gallery
This winter, Gabriela Gerber and Lukas Bardill will present the exhibition ‘Waldstücke’ (Forest Pieces) in the Plattner & Plattner Art Gallery in Pontresina. Forests are the common theme of the photo series on display, and are also a key element of the videos and animated films. The exhibition brings together a body of work on a topic that the two artists have returned to again and again over the course of their 20-year collaboration. Two new video works from 2021, Fichte (Spruce) and Hirsch (Stag) will be shown alongside the older pieces.
Gerber and Bardill will also be displaying selected images from their photographic oeuvre.
Am Hang (On the Slope), from 2014, shows an illuminated trail generated by a performative ramble across a pathless hillside. These long-exposure photographs capture the search for possible paths on moonless nights.
The playful attention devoted to ordinary subjects and situations during these walks is a key impetus and starting point for their (re)animation through drawings and photographic surveys. At first glance, these subjects and landscapes, apparently selected at random, suggest studies and imaginative transformations. When the viewer looks closer, however, the sections of forest, located in the vicinity of settlements, often develop a politically charged impact that engages with controversial questions of space, climate and environment, and the related – and at times divergent – demands of civilisation.
