Bernina Trek classic: stage 5 Chamanna da Tschierva-Chamanna da Boval
Mountain Hike
· Engadin St. Moritz
From the Val Roseg via Pontresina into the Val Morteratsch
moderate
Distance 21.9 km
The descent through the Val Roseg takes you to Pontresina. In the upper part of the valley, chances are good for spotting chamois and marmots. The lower part leads along the river Ova da Roseg and through a larch and Swiss pine forest. After passing the Hotel Roseg Gletscher, please pay close attention when looking for the correct path: it is the marked hiking path that turns to the right, not the road path. In Pontresina, continue through the Tais forest and then along the railway tracks until you reach Morteratsch station. Of course, you could also travel this route by train from Surovas station. On the left hand side behind Morteratsch station, you can take a nice break at the Morteratsch Alpine cheese dairy. Afterwards, cross the railway tracks and follow the marked path to the Chamanna Boval via Chünetta. The ascent leads through a Swiss pine forest that gets more and more sparse the higher you go. Enjoy the panoramic trail high above the Morteratsch glacier that will take you to the Chamanna Boval.

As there is often still a lot of snow at the beginning of June and most SAC huts are no longer staffed at the end of October, the best time to complete the Bernina Trek is from the end of June to the beginning of October.
